TNPL targets a million TPA by 2030

Paper production for the quarter ended 31 December 2022 is 103443 MT against 1,01,698 MT in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Meanwhile packaging board production is 36,176 MT against 46,708 MT in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited (TNPL) is a manufacturer of paper from bagasse and utilises pulp from agricultural waste such as bagasse, and woody raw materials sourced sustainably from local farmers for production of paper and packaging board. TNPL has reported INR 14.33-cr profit after tax in FY 21-22, while revenue from operation was INR 4,020-cr.

For the nine-month period ended 31 December 2022, the company has posted a net profit of Rs 285-cr, as against a net loss of Rs 8-cr in the same period of the previous fiscal. Total revenue grew 41% at Rs 3,785-cr, as against Rs 2,681-cr.

WhatPackaging? filed this report on 4 April 2023, and TNPL was trading in the lower range of the quarterly prices. The session was a bearish session and prices moved within a range of 215.70 and 221.90, with a volume of -42.66% compared to average volume that the company normally has.

During the 42nd AGM of TNPL, Dr M Sai Kumar, chairman and managing director said, "TNPL has been operating with a vision to be the market leader in paper and paperboards, by adopting innovative technologies. The company’s mission has been to be the manufacturer of world class paper and paperboards, to the tune of 1.0 million tons by 2030" In this context, TNPL has prepared a roadmap till 2028, covering all the three manufacturing units.

TNPL has produced 3,88,881 MT of paper and achieved paper sales of 4,38,010 MT. With the commissioning of the multilayer double-coated board plant, the Trichy-headquartered group TNPL made a foray into packaging board.

In the year under review, TNPL has produced 1,83,770 MT of packaging board and achieved packaging board sales of 1,84,546 MT. During the year, TNPL has exported 1,44,000 MT of paper and 21,766 MT of board, 33% of total paper sales and 12% of total board sales by way of exports to around 30 countries.

In December 2022, TNPL inaugurated its Rs 1,385-cr hardwood pulp mill, unit-two. The scope of the project covers installation of 400 tonnes per day chemical hardwood pulp mill; a chemical recovery island and a 20 MW turbo generator (BHEL); other auxiliaries like chipper, water/effluent treatment systems.
