TNPL bags the IPPTA Best Paper Award at Kolkata AGM

Tamil Nadu Newsprint & Papers (TNPL) won the ‘Best Paper Award’ at IPPTA’s 59th AGM and seminar in Kolkata. What tilted in the favour, was the ‘energy saving efforts and results in TNPL’, as presented by S Gokulakannan of TNPL.

The Indian Pulp and Paper Technical Association (IPPTA) held its 59th AGM from 23 to 24 February 2024 at Taj Hotel, City Centre, New Town, Rajarhat, Kolkata. The session witnessed two days of knowledge-sessions on the Indian pulp and paper industry.

TNPL emerged as winner of the ‘Best Paper Award’. The presentation was delivered by S Gokulakannan of TNPL. The focus was how to keep a tab on energy usage, promotion of conservative practices. And, how TNPL meets this objective.

Gokulakannan stated the global crisis of climate change. In a bid to tackle this, companies must adopt an energy management approach. This involves four things: connectivity with devices, monitoring and tracking, instant notifications, and reporting and analytics.

Also, he shared the benefits of such a system. This comprises improved energy efficiency, reduced costs, also enhanced transparency. Followed by, he presented four case-studies to support the subject.

What stood out to the delegates was the results. Fresh water conserved 70 cubic metres per day. 3 bar line pressure fluctuation eliminated and thereby power saved by 144 units per day. Power consumption reduced by the delivery line pressure set point.

The TNPL presentation emphasised the importance of a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. Also, a few other speeches that were impressive included: West Coast Paper Mills on ‘sustainable practices for environmental stewardship’; Voith Paper Technology India on ‘saving energy through synergistic innovation with digitalisation’; and Buckman Laboratories (India) on ‘New MCA generator’.
