Surge in packaged food consumption in India raises concerns over safety and standards

The surge in packaged food consumption in India, driven by eCommerce and changing lifestyles, has raised concerns about safety and labelling standards, highlighted by issues with products like Nestlé’s Cerelac. The FSSAI has shifted to a more proactive and collaborative regulatory approach, encouraging industry compliance while addressing safety concerns. This evolution aims to enhance consumer confidence and foster innovation within the food sector.

The rise in eCommerce and evolving consumer lifestyles has caused a surge in packaged food consumption in India. However, there may exist a gap while achieving the safety, quality and labelling standards. After Cadbury’s Bournvita, Nestle’s Cerelac steps in with the issue of sugar level in the package.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) highlighted a significant shift in the regulator's approach over the past decade. This change is characterised by a more proactive stance and a focus on collaboration with the food industry. Here are some key points related to this transformation:

FSSAI has moved towards being more engaged with food businesses, encouraging them to comply with food safety standards rather than just imposing regulations.

The authority has improved its response times to industry queries and concerns, facilitating quicker resolutions to issues that arise within the food sector.

By fostering a partnership approach, FSSAI aims to work alongside food companies, helping them understand and implement food safety regulations effectively. In a recent report, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) highlighted the presence of microplastics in common food items such as sugar and salt.

While the report underscores the global prevalence of microplastics, it also emphasises the need for robust data to fully understand the implications for human health and safety, particularly in the Indian context.

The regulator's evolving stance may also support innovation within the food industry, allowing companies to explore new products while ensuring compliance with safety standards.

While being industry-friendly, FSSAI remains committed to its primary role of safeguarding public health through stringent food safety measures.

This shift has likely contributed to a more dynamic food regulatory environment in India, which can enhance consumer confidence and promote industry growth.
