Siegwerk, a global manufacturer of printing inks and coatings for packaging and labels, has introduced nitrocellulose-free (NC-free) ink systems specifically designed for surface printing on polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) packaging materials—a first in the industry. Initially launched in the EMEA region, these inks complement Siegwerk’s existing portfolio of NC-free lamination applications and mark a significant step towards packaging circularity and sustainable design.

The new ink solutions are suitable for both flexo and gravure printing processes. They have been developed in alignment with the latest packaging design guidelines from industry standards bodies such as RecyClass and a circular economy for flexible packaging (CEFLEX).

“We have established ourselves as pioneers in NC-free inks for lamination applications,” said Björn Ewig, head of technology flexible packaging EMEA, Siegwerk. “Our new NC-free toolbox empowers printers and converters to meet the growing demand for NC-free flexible packaging while ensuring superior recyclate quality that complies with Design for Recycling (D4R) guidelines—without compromising on performance.”

Although nitrocellulose-based inks have traditionally been favoured, they present significant challenges in recycling. Their limited thermal stability can lead to unpleasant odours, discolouration, and reduced mechanical strength in recyclates. As a result, industry stakeholders have introduced regulations to limit NC content in packaging materials. “Our newly developed NC-free alternatives for surface printing match the technical and mechanical performance of traditional NC-based inks while offering superior recyclability,” Ewig explained.

Siegwerk’s NC-free solutions replace nitrocellulose with proprietary polyurethane binders, ensuring excellent printability as well as high heat and mechanical resistance. Industrial applications have demonstrated strong sealing and rub resistance, eliminating the need for additional over-print varnish (OPV) in surface printing.
