The Plastics Export Promotion Council (Plexconcil) has marked 70 years of promoting India’s plastics exports, having played a central role in transforming the country into a key global supplier. Founded on 15 July 1955 by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, the Council represents more than 3,000 exporters across the plastics value chain.

Since its inception, Plexconcil has facilitated international trade by organising participation in global trade fairs, exhibitions, and buyer-seller meets. These efforts have enabled Indian manufacturers to access new markets and build long-term trade relationships.

“Over the past 70 years, Plexconcil has been at the forefront of championing India’s plastics export industry, helping it evolve from humble beginnings to a global powerhouse,” said Vikram Bhadauria, chairman of Plexconcil. “Through strategic initiatives, innovative policies, and a commitment to excellence, we have empowered over 3,000 exporters to reach markets across the globe.”

India’s plastics exports have grown from USD 15.5-million in 1955–56 to over USD 11.5-billion in 2023–24. During the Covid-19 pandemic, India strengthened its position as a reliable global sourcing hub. Initiatives such as Plexconnect 2024, the country’s only export-focused plastics exhibition, have drawn international interest and supported direct trade through Reverse Buyer-Seller Meets.

“Plexconcil’s 70-year journey has been a testament to the resilience, innovation, and ambition of India’s plastics export sector,” said Sribash Dasmohapatra, executive director of Plexconcil. “Our commitment to fostering growth, enhancing competitiveness, and promoting sustainability remains unwavering.”

Looking forward, Plexconcil aims to support Indian exporters in adopting sustainable practices to meet global environmental standards. It continues to provide strategic guidance, market intelligence, and international exposure to ensure India’s competitiveness in the evolving global plastics trade.
