IndiaCorr Expo: Bobst highlights automation in the corrugation industry
Venugopal Menon of Bobst discussed the evolving landscape of the corrugated industry and Bobst's efforts to drive automation. He pointed out that increasing demands for efficiency and productivity are pushing the Indian corrugated sector toward automated solutions, with companies seeking to optimise production in limited factory spaces.

“The corrugated industry has changed drastically over the last decade. People are focusing on optimizing and automating their operations. They want to be more efficient, less dependent on manpower, and increase their throughput,” Menon explained. Rising land costs and space limitations make it difficult for manufacturers to expand, prompting investment in automated machinery that maximizes output with less dependence on manual labour.
Menon highlighted Bobst’s focus on the converting line, with strong demand for its Flexo Folder Gluers (FFG). “Since 2013, we have had close to 38 installations of FFG lines across India,” he said. He noted that these inline machines are gaining popularity due to increased quality expectations and delivery requirements from brand owners. "The only way to be cost-efficient is to have highly productive machines that can produce more in less time while minimizing variable costs."
He emphasized that the corrugated sector is defined by short production runs and just-in-time deliveries, usually within a 300-kilometre radius due to logistical constraints. “Being a just-in-time industry, customers have to produce very fast short runs and deliver quickly,” Menon said.
Menon also spoke about Bobst Connect, the new cloud-based platform that is part of BOBST’s industry vision. Bobst aims to evolve from being a provider of machinery and services to a solutions provider by leveraging data-based services and connecting its stakeholders through a digitized and automated workflow. This allows access to cloud-based information from anywhere, anytime, for flexible and agile collaborative operations. “Also, with our Helpline Advance services for remote assistance in troubleshooting, combined with a new Teams View app, we can now support and troubleshoot around 70% of issues online,” Menon explained.
Bobst is also expanding its automation capabilities by acquiring Dücker Robotics, which enables robotic solutions for feeding materials into machines and palletizing finished products. “We are talking about end-to-end solutions. It’s not only the machine; it's what happens before and after the machine,” Menon said.
Reflecting on the previous year’s expo, Menon said, “At every IndiaCorr, we add new customers to our portfolio.” He further noted that competition is driving mid-sized companies to invest in better board and converting lines.
As the corrugated industry in India continues to grow, Menon concluded, “We are at a very nascent stage in corrugated manufacturing in India. There is much more to achieve in terms of the technology we use to make boxes, whether on the printing or converting side.”
