IAPRI kicks off premier edition in India

Hosted by SIES School of Packaging (SOP) this year, the IAPRI member's conference commenced its 31 edition at Hotel Four Points, Navi Mumbai on 23 May 2023. Minister Piyush Goyal kicked-off the four-day conference with a warm welcome to the 80 foreign delegates from 14 countries.

V Shankar, president, SIES welcomed the delegates with a Sanskrit phrase - Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, meaning the world is one family. Also, he alluded to the theme of the event - Responsible packaging for a better future.

"The winners of the SIES Star Awards have won entry in the Worldstar 2024 Awards, organised by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO)," added Shankar. This has boosted the morale of the Indian packaging industry.

Roland ten Klooster, president, IAPRI officially inaugurated the session. “This edition will witness 50 presentations including 44 speeches and six poster presentations. And over 80 foreign delegates will be attending, from over 14 countries.”

Through a video message, Piyush Goyal, minister of commerce and industry, consumer affairs, food and public distribution, and textiles, Government of India, said, "The conference will catalyse the packaging industry growth in India."

Others who were present on the stage were: Jay Singh, past president and Edward Church, secretary general.

The inaugural event concluded with a vote of thanks by Prasad Iyer, director, SIES SOP/PTC. He acknowledged the presence of delegates, who have realised and gathered to discuss the scope of packaging. Of course, the students will benefit and contribute to the cause.

At the Unison Hall, Ramu Ramanathan, editor, PrintWeek/WhatPackaging? provided an overview of the Indian packaging industry. He spoke about the packaging conundrum in regard to sustainability - and the unique challenges in India. 

Later Diana Schiffer, packaging regulatory advisor, the LCA Centre provided insights into and addressed the queries on EU packaging regulations about sustainable packaging.

Day one saw sessions which covered core areas comprising distribution packaging, packaging sustainability, packaging materials, and active and intelligent packaging. Many of the presentations in the three breakaway sessions focussed on sustainability through innovation. 

As Prasad Iyer said, “The conference creates opportunities to share learning with outstanding speakers whose experience and knowledge provide invaluable insights.”
