The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in a bid to promote ease of doing business, has decided to enforce any change or amendment in labelling from 1 July every year from now on. The intent is to enable a predictable regulatory environment and greater consumer transparency.
Food Safety Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations 2020 enforce the labelling regulations. The official statement stated, "The date of enforcement has been decided as July 1 every year, subject to minimum of 180 days from the date of notification for the amendments related to FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations and also for any change in labelling specified in other FSS Regulations."
The decision is being taken to address the challenges faced by food business operators (FBOs) by providing them with a predictable, efficient framework for compliance with food labelling regulations. The initiative will ensure greater transparency for consumers in food labelling, enabling informed decision-making and boosting confidence in the safety and quality of food products.
The FSSAI shared that the move will allow FBOs to utilise pre-printed packaging materials helping in waste reduction and fostering operational efficiency.
The statement said, "Additionally, this approach supports environmental sustainability by minimising the carbon footprint associated with frequent packaging changes."
The official statement added that the consumer-centric measure will strengthen trust in the food industry, which aligns with FSSAI's commitment to safeguarding public health.
