FSSAI calls for control of chemical contamination in agricultural raw materials
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has highlighted the need to control chemical contamination in agricultural raw materials to support the food industry. Inoshi Sharma, FSSAI's executive director, noted the challenges in enforcing Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) in crops, fruits, and spices. She emphasised the importance of regular audits and rejecting non-compliant produce at the farm level.

Speaking at an event organised by the Bharat Chamber of Commerce, Sharma underscored the need to educate buyers about the effects of excessive pesticide use, which can contaminate raw materials. She also announced plans to form a committee with representatives from various ministries and departments to address this issue.
Additionally, Sharma stressed the need for accurate labelling and the avoidance of misleading claims by Food Business Organisations (FBOs). She advocated for a culture of self-compliance among FBOs and recommended employing certified third parties to ensure adherence to standards.
Bharat Chamber's senior vice-president Naresh Pachisia said that the detection of chemical residues used during crop production often results in penalties for food processors and the cancellation of export consignments of processed food. He called for greater awareness and vigilance regarding the chemicals used in agri-horticultural cultivation and post-harvest processes.
