Amazon India launched an unconventional initiative to transform used delivery boxes into temporary beds at the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings underway in Uttar Pradesh, India.
With temperatures dropping at night and limited sleeping facilities, many pilgrims previously resorted to resting on the ground. To address this, Amazon India collaborated with the Maha Kumbh organisers, redesigned and packaged 1,000 empty delivery boxes into lightweight, portable beds. These have been stationed across the festival grounds, including lost-and-found centres, volunteer hubs, and public rest areas.
Pragya Sharma, director of marketing, Amazon India, said: “Our boxes are symbols of convenience for customers. At the Kumbh, we saw a chance to reimagine them as something that could address a real need. It’s about using what we have to make a tangible difference.”
The beds have undergone safety checks by local experts to withstand wear and tear. After the festival, Amazon plans to donate usable beds to NGOs in the area and recycle the remainder responsibly.
