Meeta Gawdi, head of packaging and gifting solutions specialist at Candor Foods, has been with the company for over three years, developing an interest in the design and principles of packaging in the food industry.
Reflecting on when she entered the industry, she noted that her journey began in the world of animation and graphic design, which provided a solid foundation in the print industry. "Packaging, especially in the food industry, came as an innovative opportunity to me — a field where creativity, functionality, and science intersect," she explained. The technical aspects of packaging, such as product preservation, safety, and cost optimisation, have drawn her, in particular. "The combination of creative problem-solving and technical precision made this industry incredibly appealing," she added.
In her role, problem-solving is essential. She believes that one of the key skills driving her career is a multi-pronged approach to challenges. "I've learned to evaluate every aspect of a project — how it will be sold, where it will be sold, who the potential client is, and the technical considerations behind production," she said. Her ability to innovate while maintaining practical, cost-effective solutions is central to her success.
Candor Foods operates mainly within the dry fruit and dates sector. The company has plans to expand its product range, with a focus on eco-friendly and innovative packaging. "We are exploring advanced technologies to improve packaging efficiency and reduce waste, ensuring we stay competitive and environmentally responsible," she noted, highlighting the company's commitment to sustainability.
For those considering a career in packaging, she emphasises the balance between creativity and technical precision. "A typical day involves both strategic planning and hands-on execution. It's essential to be adaptable, eager to learn, and keep updated on new materials, trends, and technologies," she said.
Despite being in a traditionally male-dominated industry, she has not faced significant challenges. However, she recognises areas for improvement. "To support women in this field, there should be more opportunities for technical training and mentorship programmes," she said.
Lastly, she emphasised the importance of sustainability. "As professionals, we must think about how our solutions can not only meet the needs of today but also contribute positively to the environment," she concluded.
