As a woman in the fashion industry, Arshiya Kapoor had to overcome gender biases in leadership roles

Arshiya Kapoor has been working with the MIT Institute of Design since 2012. She is currently the head of the fashion department. She teaches fashion design, fashion communication, and fashion management and marketing.

She pursued both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in fashion. She said, “I was particularly fascinated by the way fashion combines art and functionality, which drew me towards this field.”

To refine her skills, Kapoor pursued a postgraduate diploma in apparel production management, which gave her a sense of production management systems and procedures.

Now, with more than a decade of experience, Kapoor has worked with many brands from across the globe. She said, “This exposure has not only enriched my understanding of global fashion trends but also taught me the best practices and innovative approaches that define successful brands worldwide. My attraction to this line of work has always been driven by a desire to blend creativity with practical application, ensuring that design meets market needs while staying true to artistic vision.”

When asked what is the most important skill she has picked up during her time in this industry, Kapoor said, “My ability to manage the entire production process, from concept to final product, while maintaining high standards of quality and efficiency.” She added that effective communication and collaboration have been crucial in advancing her career.

But, what’s next for the fashion department at the MIT Institute of Design under her tenure? Kapoor said, “Recently, we've been focusing on enhancing our curriculum to better align with the evolving needs of the fashion industry, incorporating new technologies and sustainable practices into our teaching. Looking ahead, we have some exciting plans in the pipeline like introducing new age courses and curriculum. We are also planning to expand our student and faculty exchange programs to foster a more diverse and enriched learning environment.”

When asked what advice she has for young professionals looking to enter the fashion industry, she said, “Stay passionate and patient. Success doesn’t happen overnight, so be prepared for challenges and embrace every learning opportunity.” She also proffered that young professionals stay flexible in their career paths because the industry offers various opportunities that can shape experiences.

She also said, “Networking is vital — connect with industry professionals and seek experiences and gain insights.”

While the fashion industry is often perceived as one populated with women, it is not devoid of its challenges. Kapoor said, “As a woman in the fashion industry, one challenge I've faced is overcoming gender biases in leadership roles. Women often have to work harder to prove their capabilities and earn the same recognition as their male counterparts. Additionally, balancing professional and personal responsibilities can be demanding.”

According to Kapoor, tackling these challenges will have to involve the promotion of diversity and inclusion at all levels, ensuring equal opportunities for women in leadership and decision-making positions. She said, “Mentorship programs and supportive networks for women can also help in navigating the industry and achieving career growth.”

Despite these challenges, Kapoor soldiers on, which is why she is a woman to watch.
