Albea focuses on sustainable packaging production

France-headquartered Albea, with two plants in India, bagged an award for its sustainable and eco-friendly packaging design at Cosmoprof 2023. The company is a major player in the global cosmetic packaging market, with revenues of USD 1.4 billion in 2022 and a strong entrepreneurial spirit

Albea’s managing director, Lester Pinto, said, “Albea won best prize at Cosmoprof 2023 Mumbai, in the packaging design and materials category, recognising its paper-based cosmetic tube Metamorphosis combined with the Ecofusion Top solution.” Greenleaf is just one of the many sustainable initiatives.

Greenleaf, a white-coloured tube with green printing on the surface and a multi-layer body, is a recyclable laminate for oral care and personal care and has a lower environmental impact than standard aluminium-based structures. Its barrier offers optimal formula protection for all applications. The tube consists of a 6% EVOH barrier and more than 3% PE tie layers grafted with at least 0.1% maleic anhydride.

The results obtained from the laboratory tests carried out by Plastics Forming Enterprise, according to the APR HDPE Critical and Application Guidance testing protocols, demonstrate that Albéa tube technology is compatible with the coloured HDPE recycling stream.

Albea operates 31 facilities worldwide, including two in India - one in Goa and the other in Baddi. Albea in India specialises in manufacturing tubes for beauty and personal care, oral care, pharma and cosmetic rigid packaging (CRP) for products like lipstick, eyeliner, compacts and nail varnish. The company produces oral care and pharma tubes with aluminium barriers (ABL) and plastic-barrier tubes (PBL) with ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) for beauty, personal and oral care.

Albea’s Goa plant serves as the head office for the region ( Africa, ME and South Asia). In 2005, the company expanded by setting up a plant at Baddi, to cater to its customers’ requirements, who had expanded their operations in North India. The two plants have three manufacturing activities – printing, tube-making and moulding components for tubes and CRP rigid cosmetics packaging.

The two Albea plants are triple ISO certified - ISO 9000 14,000 18,000, BRC and SMETA certified too. As of 2022, 18% of Albea’s global sales accrued from Asia. In India, Albea also produces some of the largest-selling branded lipstick packaging. It uses silk screen, pad printing, film transfer and metallisation for decoration, making its moulds to manufacture its products.
